COLLECTION SYSTEM OPERATOR
Department: Maintenance
Status: Full-time
General Nature of Work:
A skilled position responsible for performing maintenance of the wastewater collection system; operates and transports heavy equipment; and performs related duties as required. Work is performed under indirect supervision with periodic reviews provided by a supervisor looking for results obtained, changes in work methods, and adherence to department policies.
Examples of Work:
Performs in the maintenance of the wastewater collection system by cleaning, inspecting, installing, repairing, and replacing pipe and appurtenances associated with standard operational and maintenance practices of wastewater collection system.
Operates and transports heavy equipment including backhoes, trackhoes, skid-steer loaders, and other equipment.
Repairs, rehabilitates or installs sewer lines, manholes, or other appurtenances pertaining to the wastewater collection system.
Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to, preparing reports and records, completing forms, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
Assists with construction and installation projects as needed.
Attends meetings, training, etc. as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
Responsible for routinely being on-call after hours answering and responding in a timely manner to emergency calls involving District collection system on a 24-hour basis.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
High school graduate or GED.
Minimum of one (1) year related experience.
Must possess a valid SC driver’s license with a good driving record.
Physical Demands:
The work is considered medium-to-heavy in nature and requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: walking, standing, stooping, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, digging, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, and visual acuity. The position also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Working Conditions:
Work environment includes indoor and outdoor work activities that may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals, disease/pathogens, confined spaces; and is dynamic that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
